Second Career provides help to laid-off workers in need who will benefit most from training to find work. Recently laid-off unemployed workers need long-term skills training, and that is the most applicable helping tool to make them transit into high-skill, demand occupations in the local labour market.

Second Career provides laid-off workers with two most significant necessities:
  • Skills training to help them find jobs in high-demand occupations in Ontario
  • Financial support
The Ontario Government is productively helping laid off workers to get back to work. The aspirant may qualify for tuition fees and other expenses such as: books, living expenses, help caring for dependents, travel and transportation, disability supports, and other living and training costs. One can apply to Second Career if he/she:
  • Is laid off or have been laid off since January 2005,
  • Is unemployed or working an interim job,
  • Is choosing to retrain for a career that is in demand.

Several factors are to be taken into account when making out who might receive funding, for example:

  • Active job search
  • Length of unemployment
  • Education background
  • Work History
  • Labour market prospects
  • Training request
  • Experience and occupational skills
Second Career is a cost-sharing grant provided on the basis of need, so the awardees may be asked to contribute what they can to their training or education.
