Payroll Administrator

The Payroll Administrator program prepares students for a career in the field of Payroll Administration. Students participating in this course will learn essential bookkeeping and payroll skills.

They will gain in-depth knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping procedures including the preparation of financial statements, business transactions, accounts payable, accounts receivable and HST. Students will acquire knowledge of regular and non-regular earnings, allowances, benefits and how to make appropriate calculations for Canada/Quebec Pension Plan, Employment Insurance and Federal and Provincial Income Tax including statutory, withholding and payroll deductions.

Upon completion, students will be able to apply knowledge of payroll related terms and concepts, employment income, records of employment, remittance and year end federal and provincial reporting.

The objective of this program is to help students to develop skills and competencies needed to succeed and find employment in the field of payroll administration within private and public sectors. Successful graduates of this program will be eligible to receive the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification from the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA).

Course Outcome:


Upon successful completion of this course student will be able to:
  • Use the double entry system and accounting cycle
  • Understand HST and file HST returns
  • Enter accounting information in A/R, A/P, perform reconciliations
  • Prepare financial statements i.e. balance sheets, income statements and expenses
  • Gain knowledge of Payroll and its Compliance Environment
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Employment Insurance Requirements
  • Prepare Records of Employment and Worker's Compensation Remittances
  • Prepare invoices, journal entries, ledger and financial reports
  • Enter payroll hours, prepare pay cheques and pay statements
  • Understand Provincial and Territorial Legislation in Quebec and Non-Quebec jurisdictions
